Before we get to the top 5 healthiest foods, it would benefit you greatly if we go through each of the following criteria mentioned above so that you can determine on your own whether or not a particular food is healthy for you or not.

Prevents And/Or Cure Illnesses & Diseases

We all know people who have died of cancer and it sucks. Why are so many people dying of cancer and other common illnesses? I had to find the answer to this question. After an exhausting amount of research and talking with experts I've come to believe that the most important factor in preventing cancers and other illnesses is our diet. The vast majority of North Americans eat acidic diets rather than an alkaline diet. I believe this is the key to living a long healthy life.

To learn more, take a look at the following articles:

1. Healthy Eating - Explains the concept of alkalinity and acidity, and how to measure it in your body.
2. Alkaline Foods List - A comprehensive chart of the most alkaline (healthy) and acidic (unhealthy) foods.

Low in Sugar

Sugar is absolutely one of the worst things you can put into your body. Sugar is highly acidic in your body and is known to lead to all kinds of healthy problems such as diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, depression and on and on and on and on.

High in Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are the backbone to your health. They prevent cancers and other illnesses as well as promote proper bodily function.

Low in Bad Fats

There are two kinds of bad fats that you want to avoid, saturated fats and trans fats.

Saturated fats raises your cholesterol levels and clogs your arteries. You get saturated fats from mostly animal products such as meat, seafood, dairy and eggs.

Trans fats raises your cholesterol (likely more so than saturated fats) as well. You get trans fats from processed foods, fast foods, and fried foods.

Doesn't Dramatic Spike Blood Glucose Levels

High Glycemic Index (GI) foods spike your blood glucose levels (sugar in the blood).  Eating lots of high GI foods increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and obesity. To learn more about the Glycemic Index and how it affects your body check out the article Low GI Diet.

Go here for a list of low glycemic foods.

Elevates Your Mood

Foods containing Tryptophan, Selenium, Tyrosine, fish oils, Thiamine and Folic acid can help raise your mood.

Raises You Energy

Foods that provide you with more sustained energy over a longer period of time is preferred over foods that provide you with quick short-term energy. Foods that provide you with quick energy can cause you to experience energy crashes, and are likely to be less healthy for you.

It's best to get your energy from a variety of foods through a balance diet containing carbs, proteins, fats, fiber and water.

Keeps Your Body Lean

Foods that keep your body lean are those that are low calorie, low fat, low sugar, and low GI foods.
